Hugh Roome publishes Scholastic’s 33 magazines with over 15 million subscribers, including Scholastic News, Science World, The New York Times Upfront—the award-winning teen news magazine—and Scholastic Teacher, which recently celebrated its 125th anniversary. Hugh is also a publisher of various book imprints, including Children’s Press, Enchantment of the World, and Cornerstones of Freedom, as well as digital learning programs such as Core Clicks™, BookFlix®, and ScienceFlix™.
As President of Scholastic International, Hugh led 15 overseas companies and doubled revenue to over $450 million, launching new businesses in China, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. He and his team worked with schools across the developing world to provide educational materials. Earlier in his career, Hugh orchestrated the turnaround and successful divestiture of the SOHO Group and the Quality Education Data Company.
Hugh is past President of the Association of Educational Publishers and past Chairman of the Board of Directors of American Business Media. Currently, he is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of the Foreign Policy Association, a member of the Board of Trustees at Tufts University where he chairs the Audit Committee, a Trustee of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, a member of the Board of Advisors of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, and he chairs the Business Media Educational Foundation.
Hugh holds a doctorate from the Fletcher School of Tufts University. He served as an Adjunct Professor at New York University, where he taught “The Global Marketplace: Challenges and Opportunities.” In 2016 he wrote two biographies for young children: Martin Luther King American Hero and Franklin D. Roosevelt American Hero.
He is married to Katherine Roome who was Vice President and Associate General Counsel of McGraw-Hill and who now chairs the Agricultural Stewardship Association.
