AAP member organizations are recognizing the freedom to read during Banned Books Week 2013, September 22-28, through a variety of resources and opportunities for teachers, librarians, students and other book lovers.
Their activities include discussions, teaching materials, calls to action and extensive social media outreach.
AAP — one of the founding partners of national Banned Books Week - is observing through words of people from A (educator Alfred Griswold) to (Jay-) Z. Read what well-known people past and present have said about censorship, challenged books and personal liberty.
Among its many activities, HarperCollins Children’s Books is using its Epic Reads online community to host discussion forums and share original banned books content and graphics. Their teaching resource A Guide to Teaching Challenged and Banned Books gives educators and librarians a better understanding of banned books and offers answers to questions about why books are banned and the effects of challenging such works. HarperCollins Children’s has also created the shareable Banned Books Week support badge and will conduct extensive social media outreach through @EpicReads, @harperteen and @HarperChildrens.
Simon and Schuster’s dedicated Banned Books Week landing page features quotes from banned and challenged authors, highlights many of the publisher’s banned and challenged titles, encourages dialogue and features downloadable posters and bookmarks. It is also holding a poster sweepstakes featuring quotes from well-known authors. Simon and Schuster’s digital Banned Books Week catalog features titles from Judy Blume, Joseph Heller, Ray Bradbury, Jeanette Walls, Ellen Hopkins, James Howe and others. Simon and Schuster will feature Banned Books Week and the poster giveaway in their Adult Librarian and Children’s Teacher/Librarian newsletters and promote on Facebook and @simonschuster.
Farrar, Straus and Giroux highlights banned books, videos and various resources on its dedicated Banned Books Week website. Its online readers’ community, Book Keeping, will feature weekly posts about banned books and even includes a banned books quiz.
