CIC Snapshot: Taking a Critical Look at Educational Apps

During his 2016 Content in Context session Screens Aren't the Issue - Understanding 21st Century Literacy, Michael Levine, Executive Director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, discussed his team's recent analysis of early literacy apps in the app stores. What they found is that rarely do these apps mention that a language or literacy expert was involved in the development. In fact, even though the apps are labeled as educational, they don't talk about the curriculum or learning theory being used in the app, nor do they talk about any efficacy testing. No matter whether a child is using the app at home or school, with an adult or alone, Levine says the key question we should be asking is: Is tthis product any good for helping students learn?
