David Beacom joined NSTA as publisher and associate executive director in September 1999. As the head of the products division at NSTA, Beacom leads the entire content development effort, including books from the NSTA Press group; enhanced e-books; the association’s four flagship, award-winning membership journals; the NSTA Reports newspaper; and new products and services.
Under his leadership, Beacom has helped establish the association as a leading provider of classroom resources for science teaching and learning—in particular, award-winning books from NSTA Press, children’s trade books from NSTA Kids, the annual list of Outstanding Science Trade Books (developed in collaboration with the Childrens Book Council), and the thousands of classroom product reviews online in NSTA Recommends.
Previously, Beacom spent two decades with the National Geographic Society, where he was for many years the lead creative and editorial voice in education. He also played that role for Geographic’s pioneering electronic media titles for the home. In addition, Beacom managed the Society’s strategic relationship with the McGraw-Hill companies.
Prior to joining the National Geographic Society, Beacom worked at Encyclopaedia Britannica and at IBM.
This year, Beacom concluded his term on the AAP’s Learning Group Executive Council, including one year as co-chair. He also served as President of the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) and, in that role, was part of the leadership team that negotiated AEP’s merger with the then-AAP School Division.
