The Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Names Industry Experts to Learning Resources Metadata Project Working Group

Three AEP board members to assist industry-changing initiative to increase Internet discoverability of educational resources

The Association of Education Publishers (AEP) has named three AEP Board of Directors to the Learning Resources Metadata Project working group in order to assist Creative Commons in the creation of metadata frameworks for The three individuals are: Vice President Lee Wilson and Board Directors Michael Johnson and Randy Wilhelm.

The working group will create streamlined metadata tagging for learning resources tied to the Common Core State Standards. These frameworks will then be submitted to the recently launched, a partnership of Microsoft Bing, Google and Yahoo! to increase Internet search engine discoverability. The education frameworks initiative is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and will create industry-specific frameworks that will change the face of educational publishing and marketing on the Internet.

Working Group Members

Lee Wilson, president elect of AEP board of directors and president & CEO of PCI Education. PCI Education offers real-life approaches to teaching basic academic skills and life skills to struggling students, from Special Education to the regular classroom to ESL to Adult Education. Lee has completed two terms on the AEP Board of Directors. He has more than 20 years of experience in the K-12 field with expertise in strategy, products, marketing, and sales issues for technology and print publishers. “I was deeply involved in the early days of the Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) initiative and saw how critical involving all stakeholders is in establishing standards that will benefit the whole educational ecosystem,” said Wilson. “I look forward to working with educators, the search industry, and my fellow publishing and education technology professionals on what promises to be a huge step forward in making quality educational resources easy to find.  Students, teachers, parents, and anyone with a desire to learn will reap the benefits of this initiative.”

Michael Johnson, AEP board member and president of Full Potential Associates. Since 1985 Johnson has been designing, developing, and delivering technology solutions for government entities, publishing companies, universities, public and school libraries, and classrooms of all types. In 2008, Michael founded Full Potential Associates, a consultancy focused on the strategic and technical issues facing the publishing and education world. “I’m happy and honored to participate in this project in order to move education forward in the US,” said Johnson.
