Award Winners Showcase Innovation, Effectiveness and Engagement in Learning Resources

On June 4 AEP announced the winners of the 2013 awards for excellence in education marketing and innovation, quality, and effectiveness in learning resources. The AEP Awards program, which has been in existence for over four decades, is the most prestigious and comprehensive recognition program in the learning resource community. Products were judged in a three-tier process (educator review, professional review, and certification) with only the best materials advancing to the higher rounds. Read below for descriptions of the top winners, including the Golden Lamp Awards (representing the best of the best in learning resources), the Gold Innovation Award (the judges’ top pick from the Innovation Award recipients), and the Gold Beacon Award (for the most outstanding education marketing piece).

Gold Innovation Award - Ranger Rick’s Tree House, National Wildlife Federation

Forward-looking in their conception and meticulous in their execution, these products represent the epitome of how learning resources in the 21st century can marry tried-and-true educational concepts with exciting new delivery methods. Like other Ranger Rick products, Tree House is designed to inspire in young people a greater understanding and love of the natural world. Judges applauded Tree House, saying, “What a great way of bringing new life and new usages to an already vibrant magazine! The videos, photos, games, and other activities are all top-notch and very appropriate for the ages of the kids.” Another wrote, “This is what modern digital content should be. Young learners are encouraged to explore the issue and interact with the content. As always, that content is top notch in the Ranger Rick series with jokes that are funny and videos that are beautiful.”

Golden Lamp Periodicals – Scholastic Action, Scholastic Inc.

Scholastic Action is an intervention magazine that works to raise the language arts skills and reading achievement of struggling students in grades 6-12 who read at a 3rd to 5th grade level.  Judges praised the high teen-interest topics and diversity of articles, saying that “struggling readers will be drawn in by the high-interest articles and engaging activities.” Bonus features found online, including differentiated reading levels, videos, and podcasts make “an already strong product truly special.”

Golden Lamp Professional Development - Teachscape Effectiveness Platform, Teachscape

The Teachscape Effectiveness Platform is an integrated, secure digital resource that supports the development of effective teaching practices throughout an educator’s career. Judges called the platform “a great comprehensive system that does everything it says it will.” They praised its user-friendliness, wealth of information, and streamlined, time-saving approach for both teachers and administrators, believing it has broad reaching impact in classrooms, schools, and districts.

Golden Lamp Supplemental Resources – Britannica School, Encyclopaedia Britannica

Judges called Britannica School a “classy, valuable resource” with “tons of fascinating material presented in an engaging fashion.” A comprehensive resource for the classroom, homeschool environment, and library/media labs, it offers information beyond an encyclopedia volume. Rather, Britannica School puts a variety of resources including a lesson plan builder, primary sources, translator, citation generation, and research process masters at the user’s fingertips.

Golden Lamp Whole Curriculum - McGraw-Hill networks: A Social Studies Learning System, McGraw-Hill Education

With print student editions, print teacher editions, and an interactive online portal to learning and teaching, McGraw-Hill networks: A Social Studies Learning System offers a comprehensive approach to social studies. It offers standards-based print components supported with vibrant, engaging, digital avenues to enhance the student and teacher experiences. Judges called this complete toolkit an ambitious coupling of “text and visual content with a fully functioning LMS so that a teacher has everything he or she needs.” All aspects of the program are exceptionally strong, from the audio and text options, customizable lesson plans, primary resources, reading strategies, outlines, assessment, and beyond.

Gold Beacon - Big Apple Multimedia Campaign, Math Solutions

Rising to the top of the Beacon Award winners for excellence in education marketing, the Gold Beacon recipient, Math Solutions, is an an example of extraordinary practice in a complicated industry. Judges said the Big Apple Multimedia campaign is a “very well thought out campaign, and the results? Can’t do much better than “sold out, wait list!” The videos teach as well as persuade teachers to engage. There are good takeaways for the people who aren’t going to the Institute, which is always terrific in a campaign.”
