AAP Issues Call for Entries for 2019 PROSE Awards for Outstanding Scholarly Books, Journals, and eProducts

Awards recognize academic publishers’ best 2018 works in the arts, humanities, reference and sciences

Washington, DC; October 24, 2018 – Professional and scholarly publishers are encouraged to submit their top 2018 books, journals, and eProducts to the 2019 Association of American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence [PROSE Awards]. All entries must be submitted online by November 9, 2018.

Since 1976, AAP’s PROSE Awards have recognized publishers who produce books, journals, and digital products of extraordinary merit that make a significant contribution to a field of study in the arts, humanities, biological and physical sciences, reference and social sciences.

“Professional and scholarly publishers are fundamental to the dissemination of knowledge,” said Susanna Hinds, Vice President of Communications at the Association of American Publishers. “In addition to investing in the creation of scholarly works, publishers make significant investments in technology, distribution platforms, data analytics, and other groundbreaking innovations that enable doctors, researchers, educators, and ultimately the public to get the greatest possible value from the inspiring work that is the focus of the academic community.”

The 2019 PROSE Awards competition is open to AAP member publishers as well as members of the Association of University Presses (AUPresses). A panel of 18 judges will review entries in 47 subject categories and name finalists in each subject category. The shortlist for each category will be announced in January 2019.

Winners from each subject category will then go on to compete in one of five areas of excellence:

  • Biological and Life Sciences
  • Humanities
  • Physical Sciences & Mathematics
  • Reference Works
  • Social Sciences

The winners in each of the five areas of excellence will then compete for the R.R. Hawkins Award, the ultimate winner of the PROSE Award competition. AAP will reveal and recognize the winners at a luncheon on February 7, 2019 during the AAP Conference for Professional and Scholarly Publishing in Washington, DC.
