AAP Names Matthew Barblan as Vice President, Public Policy

Washington, DC; August 22, 2018 – The Association of American Publishers (AAP) announced today that Matthew Barblan will join AAP as Vice President, Public Policy, beginning August 27, 2018. Barblan is currently Executive Director of the Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property (CPIP) and Assistant Professor of Law at George Mason University.
“Matt is a talented lawyer with a deep understanding of the many complex issues facing the publishing industry,” said Maria Pallante, President and CEO of AAP. “His extensive experience in both policy and litigation will be a great asset to our mission and our members.”
During his five-year tenure at CPIP and George Mason, Barblan has taught courses on copyright and trademark law and overseen a wide range of academic and policy programs addressing copyright’s important role in fostering successful creative industries. “The publishing industry is a bedrock of America’s creative and intellectual culture, and I couldn’t be more excited to join AAP at this time,” said Barblan. “I look forward to serving the industry and promoting sound policies so that publishers continue to thrive and enrich our lives.”
As part of the senior team at AAP, Barblan will be active on a variety of business, law, and technology issues in the United States and abroad, involving a broad spectrum of industry experts, thought leaders and partner communities. He holds a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University where he was Phi Beta Kappa. He began his career as a litigator with the New York office of Latham & Watkins, LLP.
