Statement from Maria A. Pallante, President and CEO, Association of American Publishers on the Passing of Senator Orrin Hatch

We are saddened by the passing of Senator Orrin Hatch, a dedicated public servant who among many other accomplishments was a champion of American creativity. As a lawmaker, he demonstrated deep and unwavering respect for the contributions of authors and artists to society, and he prioritized the importance of U.S. intellectual property in countless trade and international agreements, including bringing the United States into the Berne Convention copyright treaty that is the basis of modern global protection and reciprocity.  Senator Hatch leaves us with a remarkable copyright legacy as well as numerous contributions to the American songbook.  With appreciation and sadness, we extend our condolences to his family, staff, and countless constituents and friends in Utah, across the country, and around the world.
