AAP and MPAA Present BookExpo Panel on the Art and Business of Turning Books into Films

Panelists include Catherine Hand, producer of A Wrinkle in Time; Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give, John Gibson from MPAA, and Darin Keesler from Picador

Washington DC – May 11, 2018; The Association of American Publishers (AAP) and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) are pleased to announce a panel discussion on the timeless art and complex business of adapting a book to film during BookExpo 2018. Speaking from a variety of perspectives and experiences, the prominent slate of panelists will discuss the exciting objectives and sometimes unexpected results that are the hallmark and value of creative collaborations.

Book to Film: The Cycle of Creativity

Turning the pages of a book into the arc of a film is a collaborative process that requires everyone in the creative cycle to capture the spirit of a story. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to hear from writers, producers and marketers about their different experiences with the adaption process and the investments that make such collaborations possible. Learn how books fuel movies, and conversely, how movies move readers – especially young ones – to discover books for the first time. Panelists include: John Gibson, Senior Director of Diversity and Inclusion and Deputy Chief of Staff, MPAA; Catherine Hand, producer, Disney’s a Wrinkle in Time; Darin Keesler, Vice President, Marketing at Picador (Macmillan); and Angie Thomas, author, The Hate U Give (Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins). Susanna Hinds, Vice President of Communications at AAP, will moderate the panel.

“AAP is thrilled to present a BookExpo panel that examines the influence of books on the big screen,” said Maria A. Pallante, President and CEO, Association of American Publishers. “The fact is that authors, publishers, and filmmakers inspire audiences, create jobs, and contribute mightily to the global economy—this is the beauty and power of creativity.”

“We are pleased to join AAP to highlight the enormous impact storytelling has in our lives,” said MPAA Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin. “From pages to pictures, great stories entertain and educate audiences around the world – all while benefitting our local economies. The combined creative industries support 5.5 million American jobs and contribute 1.2 trillion to the U.S. economy. We’re proud to incentivize and protect these creators and their work so that many more stories may be told.”

“BookExpo is honored to host this important and prestigious panel,” said Ed Several, Senior Vice President, BookExpo. “As the place where the business of bookselling gets done in North America, this event offers tremendous value to our industry and we look forward to the many insights these experts will offer.”

This event is open to all BookExpo 2018 attendees and exhibitors, and will take place Friday, June 1, 12:30 pm– 1:30 pm in 1E10.

BookExpo 2018 takes place at the Javits Center in New York May 30 – June 1, 2018. These insightful events are part of the effort by BookExpo to reimagine the event into “the place where the business of bookselling gets done in North America.” For more information or to register, please visit www.bookexpoamerica.com.
